Some Truth

When I came into this world
I didn’t know what was in store for me
My family went through drama after losing my mama
But it was even more for me
I went from being a little girl, to the woman of the house
Cuz even though within two years, my father found another spouse
Things were a little complicated with six kids and two fiends
There was more than water flowing through the pipes if you know what I mean
Every day was a struggle, just to have something to eat
God forbid we ask for new shoes to put on our feet
Or clothes on our back, but yo’ we gotta go to school
Make these grades, make some friends and try to be cool
But every time we settled in
There was another eviction
And we had to move again
And each time we thought that our new life would begin
On the right foot, so we could proceed to walkin
Promises were made, but they were just straight talking
Man, I wish I could tell you how I felt
Strugglin, just trying to get by
And every day having to watch my father get high
His mind was so distant, there was no way to feel the love
So every night, I’d get on my knees and pray to my Father above
So by the time I was 12 years old, I knew without a doubt
That getting my education was the only way out
And 12 years later, I now stand at Georgia Tech
And I came here to tell you that I’ve been truly blessed
Yeah, I studied hard, hit the books and gained some knowledge
But do you wanna know the best thing about me coming to college?
Just for being here, each and every one of you has touched my soul
And reached back to the little girl who said “Don’t let go”
You see, the light at the end of my tunnel shines from your eyes
Do you know what they meant in the 60’s by the prize?
My brothers and sisters, it was you that they died for
And just 10 years ago, it was you that I cried for
So lest you forget in your struggles and your strife
That we all go through trials and tribulation in our life
And if you take anything from me, please take this
You should love your black brothers and sisters
Cuz life is a b!%ch.
