A Woman's Job

I bear the weight of the world
Not on my shoulders, but on my hip
Cuz I decided to turn what most people would call a slip
Into a slide
My pride and joy is my little baby boy
Learning and growing
Loving and showing
That my value isn't how much is in my pocket
Or on the piece of paper that will deem me a rocket scientist
Cuz at the end of the day, my significance lies on him
And when I send him to join the forces of strong, black men
What will he do to be example
Instead of a sample?
I never really had a mom myself, so I'm doing this from scratch
Don't want him growing up like me
A latch key kid with hopes and dreams
Reading by candlelight cuz there's no electricity
It seems that my battles have prepared me for the war
But it gets to a point when you don't want to fight anymore
So I put my guns down and got off to a fresh start
I bear the weight of the world
Not on my shoulders, but in my heart
Cuz I decided to play a part in this never-ending story
My glory- is his smile
They say to know a man you should walk a mile in his shoes
I say to know a woman, a black woman, you should hear her sing the blues
With a smile on her face
Then you'll see no one could EVER take her place
People ask me how I do it any I say:
Hard enough for a man, but made for a woman
With wide hips and a strong heart
This job has GOT to be done
And I gave up unemployment when I bore my son
