Under the Knife

Ten little fingers, and ten little toes
Head full of hair and the Blackwell nose
Steady heartbeat, and breastfeeding like a champ
No need to go under fluorescent lamp
Nice strong lungs and a powerful grip
Beautiful eyes and a perfectly carved lip
The day you were born, I thanked God for your life,
But I had no idea you'd go under the knife....

First they come and tell us, your breathing is too fast
But not to worry, it usually doesn't last
Pneumothorax (hole in the lungs) made you breathe a bit too quickly
Nothing to indicate that you were at all sickly
A day or two in ICU, under the oxygen hood
Saturate your lungs with Oh-Two, and then you'd be good
Good to come home, and begin your precious life
But still we had no idea you'd go under the knife...

But before we knew it, the cardiologist came
And soon we would know this man by face and name
Dr. Campbell checked you out and two heart defects were found
And if they weren't fixed, then future problems would abound
They'd impede your life, so a transfer was in place
The Children's Hospital of Atlanta is where I’d plead my case
Dear God, you gave me the amazing gift of life.
Please protect him, as he goes under the knife...

Hour by hour, we waited for the call
But with each phone ring, our hearts would stall
Is that for us?  Did something go wrong?
Six hours never felt like so long
The last call came but I still held my breath
Until I knew you were safe from the clutches of death
Dr. Brian Kogan was the angel that saved your life
But it was God who directed his hands while you were under the knife...

The next two weeks were the hardest of my days
I'd grow and mature in unimaginable ways
I'd stare at the miracle of all that is you
Amazed at how you fared so well in what you went through
There were times that I wished that it was me instead
But it forced me to remember what the Bible said
For God so loved the world that He gave His Son's life
And I know what that means because you went under the knife...

I'll never forget the sacrifice that was made
Because you are a price that I could not have paid
When your life hung in the balance, I knew mine did as well
Life without you would have been a living hell
But your life was saved and mine given new meaning
And since that time, on Him I've been leaning
You taught me the value, joy, and purpose of life
All on that fateful day you went under the knife.
