A Leader's Affirmation

I must lead because

This morning, I was blessed enough to wake
This stress, I am strong enough to take
This child, I was fertile enough to make

I must lead because there is so much at stake

I must lead because
My brothers and sisters are losing their minds
Our mothers and fathers, we’re still trying to find
Our sons and daughters are forced to grow up
     blind

I must lead because my people are one of a kind

I must lead because
Nobody else stepped up to the plate
Nobody else knows how to derive pure love from
     hate

Nobody else asked for freedom and was told to
     wait

Therefore, I must lead, because NOBODY ELSE should determine our fate

I must lead because everyday
Children are dying or being killed
Women are taken against their will
Men are locked up or legally lynched
Politicians are just sitting on the fence
While there is STILL crack in our hoods and AIDS
     in our blood

Our lifeline is being attacked on all fronts
But niggas sittin’ back smoking blunts
I AIN'T ALL GOOD, so excuse my hostility
But it’s 2006 and I fail to see
My people where I KNOW they should be
I must lead because it is up to me

I must lead because it is my God given destiny
And I know this because
This morning……
I was blessed enough to wake
