To Be Loved

I want to be loved
In private
Inside jokes and dirty little secrets
Of "you had to be there"s
"And nobody knows"
The kind of love that can't be shared
Because it's sacred
The kind of love that feels like self-care
Because he's oh-so-good to me
And nobody else needs to see
How with him, I come undone
Because I don't have to hold myself together
In his arms
Not only am I soft, but I am a puddle
Melted and uncontained
For this kind of love has no boundaries or borders
We just get to be
In our privacy our privacies create an intimacy
That is ours and ours alone
I want to be loved in private
Because
You can learn a lot about someone
From how they move
When nobody's watching
When nobody is there
To condemn or congratulate
How does he choose to move
When it's only he and I
I want to be loved
In private.

I want to be loved
In public
PDAs and shouting from the rooftops
Of "I'm so blessed to have her"s
And "isn't she lovely"s
The kind of love that MUST be shared
Because it inspires others
To believe in love again
Or for the first time, even
Because everyone needs to see
How with him, I'm my most authentic me
Because he doesn't want me any other way
The kind of love where
We match 'cuz we match
And we vibe because we're a tribe
And as we quest on this journey of love
Others come along
Because our love is contagious
And it spills onto everyone around us
I want to be loved
In public
Because
You can learn a lot about someone
From how they move
When their whole world is watching
Ready to condemn or congratulate
How does he choose to move
When he's in the public eye
I want to be loved
In public

I want
Simply
To be loved
